Junie's Story
Junie was born in Port-au-Prince Haiti in December 1985 where she was raised. Junie complete both high school and university in Haiti where she studied diplomacy and international relations at the Academy National Diplomacy & Consular (ANDC). She then moved to the US in 2010, after the earthquakes that struck Haiti, at the age of 24 and lived in Springfield Massachusetts for 2 years with her first husband. After Junie’s ex-husband cheated, she decided to move to Texas and become a correctional officer to get a fresh start. She worked for the state for 7 years and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. After meeting Jabe, getting married. and giving birth to their second child she decided this job was no longer for her and resigned. Junie then became an Armed Officer in 2020 at Dell Children Hospital where her son was treated for pneumothorax after being born prematurely. While working at the hospital the desire Junie had to help people by becoming a nurse that she had when she first moved to the US resurfaced, and she remembered how her ex had stopped her from getting her education as he did not want her to be improve herself and surpass him. When Junie went to Jabe with her plan to go back to school though he encouraged her to pursue her goal even though she thought she was too old to go back to school. She got accepted into the Nursing program at ACC in 2020 and started her classes. Junie changed her position at the hospital at this time and went from working as an Armed Officer to working with children as a Behavioral Health Care Technician. As Junie started school and working with patients though, she began to wonder if this was what she really wanted out of life, and it was at this point that she remembered the dream she had at fifteen of running her own beauty supply. Junie then changed her major from nursing to small business management. She remembered braiding her own hair as a kid and working with her mother at the store she owned in Haiti and realized that this is what she really wanted to do. So, in 2021 Junie began talking to beauty supply owners about opening her own shop. Some ignored her while others mocked her, finally she found one that told her how difficult it could be to find suppliers and get started as a black owner. Junie then started doing more research and found out about Beauty Supply Institute (BSI). She told her husband about them and decided to contact them. At the time Junie and Jabe didn’t have the funds to start the program so after looking at what she was making at the hospital and what they were spending on day care Junie resigned her my position at the hospital and started a licensed daycare business in the living room of their home called Short Stuff Daycare. Junie then contacted BSI again in 2023. From there with the help of God, her loving husband, and her family Junie found a way to achieve her childhood dream.
Jabe's Story
Jabe was born in the small town of Baytown Texas outside of Houston in 1978. Jabe’s father worked to support his family of four at a chemical plant for most of Jabe’s childhood. In Jabe’s freshman year of high school however his family suffered a major blow when his dad lost his job, and they were forced to move to Austin to live with his paternal Grandparents. This adjustment was tough on everyone and the marriage of Jabe’s parents did not survive this period unfortunately. Jabe coped by throwing himself into completing school, scouting, and working. Upon graduation Jabe’s original plan was to become a teacher. To work toward this goal Jabe began attending Austin Community College as his limited funds would allow and got a job at a nearby day care. After seven years of this Jabe got tired of the politics associated with working with kids and the minimal pay that came with it. He then went to work for Dell as what he affectionately called a box kicker. Jabe leveraged his entry level temp job into a full-time position and later a promotion but after three years he was laid off when the market crashed. Having come to the conclusion during his time with Dell that pushing paper and people was easier than pushing boxes Jabe found a position with a company called HD Supply. His first position with them was in Austin as an administrative assistant but after three years and finally completing his associate degree in history and beginning his studies in HR management at Concordia Jabe was offered a position as an assistant manager in Dallas. He stayed in this position for roughly ten years before meeting his soon-to-be wife Junie Marie Chapman in 2018 and making the decision to move back to Austin to start a family. Marrying Junie brought Jabe a bonus daughter and in 2019 his son was born. Shortly after this he found himself dissatisfied with trying to balance his family life and the long hours he had to work and after getting headhunted by a company called Revelry made the move to join their team. Turns out not all money is good money though and while Jabe found himself making better money he also found himself increasingly unhappy with his work environment. So, after moving to San Marcos,he made the decision to find a new job and went to work at Pavestone as an inventory clerk. With only a year under his belt Jabe was promoted to Yard Supervisor and for the first time in a long time finally found himself enjoying his job. There was only one snag, Junie was not enjoying hers and having married a woman with big dreams to achieve and with a family to support Jabe threw his whole support behind Junie’s dream to own a beauty supply despite knowing next to nothing about the industry. He knew his wife though and believed that helping her to start this business would help her to not only achieve her dream but also build the life they wanted for their family.
